Cogwright opened its doors on Jalan Tun Abdul Razak in 2009. The founding watchmaker had spent eight years on repair benches in Kuala Lumpur before deciding that a smaller, more deliberate workshop — one where every intake is known by name and reference number rather than batch — was the right way to work.
The name was chosen for its plainness. A cogwright works with gear trains; the word carries no pretension. The goal was to match that: a workshop known for the quality of its ledger entries rather than for marketing language.
In the years since, the scope has widened from simple strap work to full chronograph overhaul and heritage clock restoration. Each expansion followed demand that came through the door naturally — owners in Johor Bahru who had a Seiko chrono sitting idle, or an inherited mantel clock with a broken suspension spring and no obvious place to take it.
Today Cogwright handles three main disciplines: bracelet and strap bench work, chronograph servicing and clock or pocket watch restoration. Work is taken one piece at a time; the bench is never overbooked to the point where documentation suffers.
Every service produces a written record — condition at intake, parts used, timing results where applicable, photographs for complex work. Owners receive a copy. This is not industry standard practice across Malaysia's repair sector, but it has become Cogwright's defining feature and the reason most new enquiries arrive by personal recommendation.

Lead Watchmaker
Sixteen years on the bench, with a focus on column-wheel chronograph movements and Swiss calibre servicing. Responsible for all timing reports and final sign-off.
Nurul Lina
Restoration Specialist
Handles clock and pocket watch restoration work, including bushing, case refinishing and strike sequence adjustment. Trained in Penang before joining Cogwright in 2015.

Intake & Bracelet Technician
Manages initial condition surveys, photography and bracelet bench work. The first point of contact for most pieces entering the workshop.
How quality is maintained across every intake
Movement inspection protocol
Each movement is inspected under magnification before work begins. The condition survey captures wear points, damage and any prior non-standard work, all photographed.
Timegrapher verification
Movements are rated on a timegrapher before and after service. Results across six positions are recorded on the service document and returned to the owner.
Ultrasonic cleaning
Bracelets and certain case components pass through an ultrasonic bath using a neutral solution. Parts are rinsed and dried before reassembly.
Stage-by-stage agreement
Restoration work proceeds in agreed stages. No new scope begins until the owner has confirmed understanding of cost and anticipated timeline for that stage.
Manufacturer-specified lubrication
Lubricants are applied at manufacturer-specified points and quantities. The workshop holds a range of oils and greases appropriate to each calibre type.
Owner data handled carefully
Contact details and service records are held for workshop correspondence and kept no longer than needed. No information is passed to third parties outside necessary supply chain contacts.

Mechanical watches and clocks are durable objects when attended to thoughtfully. A bracelet with stretched links or a pushed-out pin is a common result of years of wear; the fix is straightforward if approached with the right tools and the correct pin diameter. What matters is the precision of the work, not the speed at which it is done. Cogwright has spent over a decade developing a rhythm that keeps quality consistent — intake by intake, ledger entry by ledger entry, on the same bench in Johor Bahru.
Chronograph movements carry more complexity than a standard three-hand calibre. The coupling mechanism, the column wheel or cam, the hammer and the reset levers all interact in a sequence that has to be correct for the sub-dials to zero properly. A workshop that services chronographs regularly builds familiarity with common failure points across different calibre families. That familiarity reduces the chance of a missed adjustment that only shows up weeks after collection. Clock restoration operates on a longer timeframe still: pivot holes wear gradually, suspension springs fatigue under constant flexing, and strike sequences drift as worn teeth skip positions. Identifying which components need attention — and which should be left alone — is a matter of experience accumulated over many pieces.
